What’s Bali Got To Do With It
There's a concept I use with my clients called "What's Your Bali".
The idea is that we are working towards reaching a destination. When you get into the weeds of you own mind, we zoom out and make sure each decision is taking you to your destination: a tropical island paradise.
Now this isn't a concept I made up. I have had no less than 3 business mentors use the same analogy in their own words.
But the idea is this: when you want to go somewhere, you are thinking about the destination first, not the seat of the plane you are booking. You are thinking about the white sandy beaches, the late night dance parties (j/k I'm probably too old for that) the food you are going to eat & the people you might meet. Most importantly, you are thinking about how badly you need to get there so you can finally get some peace. All of these outcomes determine which swim suit you are going to pack and will you bring 3 romantacy books or 2. Not the other way around.
When I hear my clients talking about how many modules their course will have or what they need to charge for a package, before we are totally clear on the end result, that's when we zoom out.
Instead, we need to think about who they are, where they are going (what's their Bali?) and then you can figure out the details for how you are going to get them there.
Furthermore, you need to make sure it aligns with your Bali. If you have to do a bunch a shit that is going to interrupt your peace & make you work weekends so you can make it work, then it's not the right fit.
Not only do I apply this to business outcomes, but also the person you are becoming.
When you step into the next era of your career, you have to start becoming the person you want to become. You have to start being that person on the white sandy beach chilling with a coconut.
You have to start thinking and acting like the Founder who makes 250K a year while working 20 hours a week (if that's what you want).
Otherwise, nothing will change.
I'm not saying to just start working 20 hours a week if you aren't there yet (which I can help you do). I am saying you have to envision the outcome you want. And become that.
👉 How is that version of you making decisions? Start making decisions like that.
Reverse engineer what you do to get where you want to go.
There is plenty of time to choose window or isle and figure out your packing list. But first you need to pick your destination and see it sooooo vividly that you make it happen.
👉 Who does future you have on their team?
👉 Do you work with a business strategist (ahem) or have someone doing your social media?
👉 Do you pay your taxes on time and have investments?
👉Do you go to the gym regularly?
👉 Are you still doom scrolling at 9 PM or have you started prioritizing your sleep?
You can't be the person you want to become, if you don't start becoming that person.
You have to make decisions through the lens of you future self and stay committed when it sucks (think how worth a red eye flight is if you know you are going somewhere dope af). You have to be willing to get the F out of your own comfort zone and try things that you are probably going to fail at at first.
But failure is just growth in disguise.
And in the work I do with my clients, we don't think about it as failure, it's experimenting.
Today I want you to think about your Bali. Write down the clear picture of your future self that you want to become. But write it down as if it is in the present. And do that every day for the next week. Spend time thinking like that version of you and you will be amazed at what happens.
